In Brock Turner’s home town, we’re raising kids who are never told ‘no’

But it’s not hard to draw a straight line from this little ‘burb (or a hundred like it) to that dumpster at Stanford. What does being told “no” mean to that kid? If the world is his for the taking, isn’t an unconscious woman’s body? When he gets caught, why wouldn’t his first impulse be to run, make excuses — blame the Fireball, or the girl or the campus drinking culture? That is entitlement. That is unchecked privilege.

You Can’t Promote Freedom In Cuba By Denying It To Americans

It is still difficult to draw a direct casual relation between President Obama’s travel policy and the Cuban reforms that have coincided with his administration. Short-term political detentions may have increased, but so have street protests. What is clear, though, is that a surge in American visitors over the same period has not lead to lesser freedoms and opportunities for Cubans than those they had a decade ago. If anything, the facts strongly suggest that expanded American travel has contributed to the growing autonomy of the Cuban people.

The Mission of the Church: Thompson’s Conclusions

Some may object that Jesus was sometimes not so humble. Sometimes he took a whip and cleared the temple courts or pronounced judgment against the Pharisees in the most severe terms. But we are not called to be like Jesus in every respect — only in his self-emptying. Unlike Jesus, we are not the judges of the world (that comes later), and God does not exercise his vengeance through us. Rather, God has a very clear plan. He wants those who see the church to see the kenosis of Jesus lived in us — and so be drawn to it.

Everything You (Might Have) Wanted to Know About Writing and Publishing

Most writers do not make a lot of money from book publishing. Again, this is not to say they aren’t appropriately compensated. It’s only to say that the dream of quitting your job to go live in a cabin in the woods and write books is just that—a dream. Many writers, given the amount they make off a book when factored against the amount of time invested in writing, editing, and promotion, could be more efficient earners if they worked on an assembly line down at the local auto plant.

Read Like a Reader

Reading like a student is limiting. It’s like restricting yourself to one kind of pie. Apple is great, but wouldn’t life be better with cherry or pecan on the menu too?
Instead, I want to read like a reader. This includes reading for information, but it encompasses more.

Britain’s Royal Navy warships are breaking down because sea is too hot

Britain’s £1bn ($1.4bn) warships are losing power in the Persian Gulf because they cannot cope with the warm waters, MPs have been told.
Six Type 45 destroyers have repeatedly experienced power outages because of the temperatures, leaving servicemen in complete darkness.
