World Cup update

Fridays tend to be relaxed days, so I’ll share some observations about the World Cup (which continues today):

  • Yeah, Argentina’s first goal against Mexico shouldn’t have been allowed. And yes, England was robbed out of a goal. As I noted last week, there has been some terrible officiating at this year’s Cup.
  • I hope that the U.S. will use this year’s limited success as a springboard for future international competition. A North American presence would bring some balance to international soccer.
  • Another great quote from Maradona, talking about the halftime skirmish between Argentine and Mexican players: “As we were going to the locker room, they got into it with Bolatti, who is gentler than Lassie on a leash.”
  • Predicted winners for this round:
  • Uruguay
    Argentina
    Spain
    Netherlands

Enjoy the rest of the tournament!

I must say I’m disappointed with the US outcome this World Cup. We couldn’t have asked for a better draw. We couldn’t have asked for a better setup in the knockout round vs. Ghana. The game was very disappointing. What is more is the horrific defense. I know we have better defensemen than that in America because I played with them for years. It is unconscionable to me the mistakes that were made in the back to have Ghana score both goals. It was embarrassing. We need to start supporting the MLS, putting money into the system and into the pockets of players so they can feed their families. Only then will we put the best on the field. I’m convinced we did not have it this time around (which is crazy… its the World Cup for petesake).

Prediction: Winner of Argentina/Germany tomorrow wins the Cup.

Jr, I can’t argue with much of anything in your comment.

Brian, I was really surprised how everyone got caught up in the Brazil hype. Well, not really surprised. But it sure helped me do well in the picking contests! :-)

I don’t think soccer will ever draw the world-class athletes from the US. Baseball, the sport that offers the most guaranteed money, is already losing them to football and (more and more) basketball.

And as long as soccer is the #4 option for athletes, MLS will look like little league compared to what we’ve watched from Germany, et al, this year.
