How would you define politics?

(Due to a computer error, which was me trying to use a computer, this didn’t run on Tuesday. I’ll run it again on Wednesday, because I’m interested in the discussion)
I guess it’s about that time of year, so a discussion of politics should be well in season. I’d like to hear what you consider to be “politics.”

In the book To Change The World (which we studied in recent weeks), Hunter warns against the mistake of confusing all things public with politics. At the same time, I hear people snidely remark that it’s impossible to completely escape participating in politics. We can define all things public as politics, or we can set some limits to the word.

All of that leads me to ask how you would define politics. What is included? What sort of public activity is excluded?

Looking forward to your comments.

    i smiled at Robert’s definition. =o)

i’m thinking politics includes at least governmental office/authority and civil laws. Perhaps the category is bigger than that, but i think those are definitely denoted in the term.

I not sure how I would define the word “Politics”. I guess I am more interested in the question of “What kind of politics?”. I say that because I believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ is very political and very politically subversive to the politics and political kingdoms of this world (that is, if the Gospel is not compromised). With that in mind – and to disagree with Simply Robert slightly – rather than saying politics is striving for secular power, I would say it first depends on the question of “what kind of politics?”.

I do understand and sympathize with the comment made by Simply Robert.

    Grace and peace,

    Rex
