4 Godly Disciplines Unique to this Decade

There are no new sins, only more diverse and efficient ways of committing them. Before we let the mainstream of 21st Century culture catch us in its current, let’s hit pause for a moment and get our bearings. Perhaps it’s time to swim against the information flow.
Here are four godly disciplines to pursue in 2014 that have taken on a unique significance in the last five to ten years.

Beautiful in Its Time

He gave me those moments then, and today He gives me new moments. When I am old, He will give me still more. He will not run out, and the new blessings are never less than the old. Each moment was not only fitting, but fitting for each moment. It’s not true that those were the days. Those were those days, and these these, and every one beautiful in its time.

When I Grow Up…

In the last few years, I have learned a lesson that I should have mastered in my teens.

The little bit of this world that I am actually in charge of is me.

I’ve spent way too much time trying to fix others. Too many hours have been eaten up in senseless worry over things I couldn’t control. Too few days have been invested in truly helping others by showing up and, more often than not, shutting up.

3 Things I Wish I Knew Before We Got Married

According to most research, more than 50 percent of people who say “I do” will not be sleeping in the same bed eight years from now. And though Scripture alludes to the fact that adultery and abuse may be reasons individuals might end a marriage, I’d be willing to bet that most challenges experienced in marriage are the result of unawareness. Most people—myself included—jump into marriage with suitcases full of misconceptions and bad theology, entirely unaware of the unique beauty and paradoxical intentions of marriage.

5 ways you can bomb a sermon to young people

I know we are addicted to instant results and naturally gravitate toward the easy path of least resistance. I know the temptation to settle for mimicking your favorite preacher that online podcasting has provided us. But finding your own voice, style, and rhythm as a communicator of God’s Word is a journey that takes a lifetime. And it’s better to know one thing up front: there are no shortcuts.

No More Gender: A Look into Sweden’s Social Experiment

Still, in looking at the Swedish experiment, I believe complementarians and egalitarians should be able to lock arms and say, We believe gender is a gift of God. We believe God made us male and female and not gender-neutral “humans,” and that equality does not erase gender distinctives.

Why is English Spelling So Messed Up?

If you’re a kid learning how to write, or an adult speaker of a language with sensible spelling, English spelling can seem like a cruel prank. And even if you’re a completely literate adult native speaker of English, you will still run into situations that make you wonder how English spelling ever got so messed up. Here are some answers for the next time you clutch your hair yelling, “WHYYYYYYYY?!?!?” They may not comfort you, but they may make you see English as less of an arbitrary meanie and more of a victim of history.

Two charged with battery following fight over Bible, Ten Commandments

A man and a woman were arrested for battery following a fight over the Bible and the Ten Commandments, Georgia police said.

One Man. One Cat. Multiplied

When you think about it, no one is ordinary. You could put a totally bland cat-and-guy couple in front of a hundred people, ask them to look, and each one would see a very different pair, different in a thousand subtle ways, because everybody looks at everything with different eyes.
Case in point: Mike Holmes (companion to Ella) is a cartoonist. And every so often, for an hour (that’s his house rule; he does each of these in an hour) he will do a portrait of himself and his cat, through the eyes of another cartoonist.
