As we continue discussing the questions surrounding church music, I’m wondering what other topics need to be included. Philosophy of worship has been mentioned, as well as hermeneutical principles. What else do you feel needs to be addressed?
And major thanks to all who have commented. So far the discussions have been respectful, especially considering the baggage that most people in our brotherhood bring to this issue: baggage of past experiences, baggage of past online discussions, even the baggage of concerns for the future.
Have a great weekend!
I can think of two off the top:
1) Our lack of using the Psalter; considering it was the standard (though, not exclusively) from the early church all the way through the Reformation. So why are we in the Restoration Movement removed from what connects us to so much history of the church and the use of biblical language in song?
2) Lyrics. This connects to the above and also goes back to a couple topics ago regarding emotions. In that thread I mentioned how Paul in 1 Cor 14 emphasized how important the use of the mind was when praying, when singing, and when teaching. Today, it seems we sing songs with less care about mentally connecting with the lyrics and more for emotional effect, and this could be because we are not mentally involved in comprehending the words and what they actually mean. So this would have to do with cognitive function while singing.

I don’t have issues with church music, but I do have a subject I wish you would take up when you get the time.
If you really want something to discuss, that I believe most don’t understand, try the following.
“baptism with the Holy Ghost”
Mat 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and [with] fire:
Mat 3:12 Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
If we keep these two vs. in context, it sounds to me like John is talking about “judgment day” where Jesus will judge the righteous, and the wicked. not some earthly baptism.
Laymond,
Doubt that I say what you want me to say, but I have laid out what I think the Bible says. And provide links to more in depth studies:

Tim, please allow me a few questions.
#1 do you believe you can be baptized in the “Holy Ghost” and not be saved.?
#2 Do you believe one can be safe in Jesus, and then pulled out of that safe place by Satan?
#3 Do you believe once saved forever saved.?
#4 Do you believe you can be baptized in water, and not saved?
#5 can you give a reason for your belief?
Laymond,
I think you can tell that this post is NOT about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Feel free to comment on that post.
Grace and peace,
Tim
sorry, guess I got lost.
