Dreams

Jacob’s Dream by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld

What do you think about dreams? In biblical times, dreams were one of God’s most frequent communication media. He spoke with godly people (think Joseph and Joseph), as well as ungodly people [like Abimelech (Gen 20:3), Laban (31:24), the butler and baker of Pharaoh (40:8-19), Pharaoh himself (41:36), and Nebuchadnezzar (Dan 2:1-45; 4:5-33)]. There was a promise of God-inspired dreams during the age of the Spirit (Acts 2:17), but the New Testament doesn’t directly mention dreams as part of God speaking to His people during that time.

One of my cousins, Kevin Archer, talked to me about work he is now doing interpreting dreams. You can see his website: Onsite Dreams. I haven’t had a lot of time to talk with Kevin about his work, but he asked me for a reaction from a biblical standpoint. I thought I’d allow you, oh gentle readers, to respond to some of his questions:

Does God want us to view them as messages from him? Does God teach us what to do with our dreams? Does God give us dream interpreters in modern times? What should we do when our dreams seem important to us? How do we know if our dream has been properly interpreted? Has the church avoided this topic or over looked it or ???

I’d like to hear your thoughts.

In a church I served as minister there was an elderly widow who, along with her late husband of fifty plus years, had served God in Honduras as missionaries, in local churches where her husband preached, and in prison ministry (which is where it all began). This was a second vocation for them, as they both were young school teachers. I asked them how they discerned God’s call into ministry. She told me how she and her husband had heard a sermon or something on Matthew 25.31-46 (The Sheep and the Goats) and that night, they both had dreams that they were teaching to the poor and imprisoned. So they took that as a sign of God’s call, returned to ACU for Bible and Ministry.

Who am I to question whether God spoke to them in a dream?

    Grace and Peace,

    Rex

It is true that the Lord used this method for a long time, and it is true that there was always worth considering elements that can be a good indication for dreams today

1 .- God always made it clear that the dream came from a message from the
2 .- God had a purpose of why the dream.
3 .- Whenever the dream was interpreted correctly
4 .- The most important thing is in his own word of God Hebrews 1:1
“God, who at sundry times and in many ways (including dreams) at another time (OT) parents (Patriarchs) by the prophets (PROPHECY) in these last days (he was a Christian New Testament) has spoken the Son (Christ)

    Gracias, Ever

    Tim,

Joseph and Pharaoh may show that even if a dream is meant to have a meaning, that doesn’t mean the dreamer has the ability to interpret it. Perhaps we just take for granted that, ‘if i feel like a dream is from God, then it must mean whatever i happen to think it means.’

True story: I know someone very close to me who dreamed of 9/11/01 during an afternoon nap on 9/10/01. I know this because he told me about it when he woke up after the nap on 9/10/01. His dream was that his grandpa was driving along Pennsylvania Avenue at night. He was in the back seat of the car with the window down when he looked out the window and saw the top-half of the Statue of Liberty situated on top of the Capitol Building dome (just the dome part). They were floating in the sky above the National Mall. Attached together, they both lifted up higher into the sky then in the blink of an eye it became day time and they crashed down to the ground and blew up. Then when the next day happened, it all rushed back into our heads and we were blown away. I was speechless. Seems a little bit beyond coincidence for me.

I definitely think God can communicate via dreams. He can do what He wants. Now, with everything else, interpretation is up for debate. I think we could/should pray for wisdom in this regard.
