Are Tongues Real Languages?

When professional linguists study modern glossolalia (tongues-speech), they come away convinced that contemporary tongues bear no resemblance to true human language. After years of extensive research, University of Toronto linguistics professor William Samarin concluded:

Glossolalia consists of strings of meaningless syllables made up of sounds taken from those familiar to the speaker and put together more or less haphazardly. The speaker controls the rhythm, volume, speed and inflection of his speech so that the sounds emerge as pseudolanguage—in the form of words and sentences. Glossolalia is language-like because the speaker unconsciously wants it to be language-like. Yet in spite of superficial similarities, glossolalia fundamentally is not language. What We Mean When We Talk About Sex

I sometimes wonder if as Christians, we also tend to preach about sex in this unfortunately one-dimensional way. A physical act- like other acts- but one to be avoided until marriage. An act to be avoided- like smoking, or drinking, or doing drugs. We often treat sex like a “say no to drugs campaign”.
But what if in our one-dimensional perspective, we’ve failed to recognize some of the most valuable components about sex and a sexual relationship. And what if those other components, hold some of the most motivational factors when it comes to approaching the conversation about abstinence?

The Impossibility of the Ideal Church

He who loves his dream of a community more than the Christian community itself becomes a destroyer of the latter, even though his personal intentions may be ever so honest and earnest and sacrificial (emphasis added).
He enters the community of Christians with his demands, sets up his own law, and judges the brethren and God himself accordingly. He stands adamant, a living reproach to all others in the circle of brethren. He acts as if he is the creator of the Christian community, as if his dream binds men together.

The Mighty Mysterious Camel

I don’t think any of this undermines the significance of Genesis or the rest of the Old Testament as the word of God. But it does mean that we have to rethink the way we approach the text. Although we find real history in the text of the Old Testament, we must also remember that the history is told according to ancient Near Eastern norms and practices. These are not the same as modern expectations.

Five Things This Christian Learned from Islam: Respect

So while our practices will differ, I think there is still value in growing in our respect, in knowing that though I can wear sport pants or shorts to church, I need to remember my low aspect before a high God. If physically washing or if wrapping the Bible in a cloth and kissing it when we pull it down to read it, helps us remember this, that is a beautiful thing.

What’s the Primary Task of Elders?

So, let’s simplify the main tasks of an elder:

  • Be aware of their own person.
  • Shepherd God’s flock.
  • Instruct and rebuke.
  • Set an exemplary example.

According to these verses, decision-making isn’t listed as a primary task. Perhaps elders and churches need to reevaluate their outlooks on this function within God’s kingdom.

9 Things Great Leaders Say Every Day

Your words are among your greatest tools. They’re a window into your vision, your values and your abilities. So, whether you’re running a giant organization or just trying to herd a group toward a certain outcome, there are messages you need to communicate constantly in order to lead effectively.

How To Give A Killer Presentation

On the basis of this experience, I’m convinced that giving a good talk is highly coachable. In a matter of hours, a speaker’s content and delivery can be transformed from muddled to mesmerizing. And while my team’s experience has focused on TED’s 18-minutes-or-shorter format, the lessons we’ve learned are surely useful to other presenters—whether it’s a CEO doing an IPO road show, a brand manager unveiling a new product, or a start-up pitching to VCs.
