Top Law Professors: Arizona Religious Freedom Bill Has Been ‘Egregiously Misrepresented’

So, to be clear: SB1062 does not say that businesses can discriminate for religious reasons. It says that business people can assert a claim or defense under RFRA, in any kind of case (discrimination cases are not even mentioned, although they would be included), that they have the burden of proving a substantial burden on a sincere religious practice, that the government or the person suing them has the burden of proof on compelling government interest, and that the state courts in Arizona make the final decision.

If at first you don’t succeed … find another source

On my fifth read (yes, I probably have read this story more than anyone actually paid to care) I decided this: I think they wanted the story exactly this way, with this slant and tilt and lack of balance. It is a tale of valor and bravery and destiny overcoming all odds. “A love story” that is “making a statement” as two other, unrelated and unessential sources were allowed to say.

The Jesus Lens, or the Jesus Tea-Strainer?

The end result, ironically, is that while the Jesus we find in the Gospels fits well with the rest of the scriptures – as you might expect, given that he inspired them – neither the Jesus of the Gospels, nor the Bible, fit particularly well with the pastiche of Jesus that the Red Letter guys want to promote. When all is said and done, the biblical Jesus cannot be squeezed thorough the fine mesh of the progressive Jesus tea-strainer.

Churches of Christ: We Have A Dilemma!

So as I see it, about the time the Churches of Christ became comfortable about being one among many churches—at least among evangelical churches (although I myself think we are very inconsistent to only identify with evangelical churches), those same denominations started moving away from that very position and towards the non-denominational position that Churches of Christ were abandoning.

I’d really Dig a Camel about Now!

It never ceases to amaze me how some scholars think that ‘absence of evidence=evidence of absence’. The fact that we at present can find no remains of camels in the Holy Land going back further than the time of King David proves nothing about the preceding eras. Nothing! Hardly 1 percent of the Holy Land has been archaeologically excavated. One cannot argue that nothing could have existed before 1000 B.C. so far as camels are concerned without having a reasonably comprehensive knowledge of all relevant sites from before that period. In fact not even famous sites like Bethel or Schechem have been fully excavated. All we can say is we now have evidence camels were used as far back as King David, which is useful to know.

Numbers: Human sacrifices – in a good way

When you hear the phrase “human sacrifice” it brings up images of people dressed in black robes around some cultist fire with drums beating in the background. But in Numbers 8, the priests were presented to God as human sacrifices in exactly the same way that certain portions of meat from consecrated offerings were presented. These men were truly offered as human sacrifices.

6 Ways To Harness The Power Of Daydreaming

Pausing is a powerful part of the creative process, whether it’s watching a distant sunset, strolling a nearby park, or taking a long shower.
Our brains need time to reflect and recharge. The act of pausing facilitates creative cognition and brings about those “aha” and “eureka” solutions.

Judge allegedly said juror having a heart attack ‘can wait’

The report said the officer informed Justice Joel Blumenfeld of the situation, but the judge told the officer to allow the prosecutor to finish his round of questions.
“There’s a few more minutes left,” the judge was quoted as saying. “They can wait.”
However, the officer determined Dorjee needed assistance and removed him from the pool. An ambulance was called about 10 minutes after he initially complained of chest pains, the Post said. Doctors at Jamaica Hospital determined he was suffering from a heart attack.
