Scot McKnight’s Foreword to “A Farewell To Mars”

At the simplest level of evangelicalism, and by that I mean anyone who affirms salvation in Christ alone, it impossible for me to comprehend how a Christian can kill a non-Christian who is thereby prevented from turning to Christ just as it is also beyond me how any Christian can kill another Christian at the orders of State military leaders. In both instance the Christian renders to Caesar what is due only to Christ.

Bible Translations and Bible Reading

That being said, selecting an English translation to use is very important. Dr. Gentry explained further, that all translations exist on a continuum. On one side of the continuum are translations that try to match the Greek as best as possible with English words. These translations are called “Formal Equivalent” translations and consist of the King James Version (KJV), the New King James Version (NKJV), the New American Standard Bible (NASB), the English Standard Version (ESV), and the *Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB). On the other side of the continuum are translations that try to better match the English language for readability. These are called “Dynamic Equivalent” translations and include the New Living Translation (NLT) and the New International Version (NIV). For a “Formal Equivalent” I prefer the ESV and the NASB, and for a “Dynamic Equivalent” I prefer the NLT.

Blomberg’s New Book Asks, “What Are We to Do with All Our Stuff?”

The Church is no better, Blomberg reveals. “We own over $230 billion worth of ecclesiastical real estate and buildings. We have created a performance-based mind-set in far too many of our worship services that can only be satisfied with state-of-the-art facilities and technology. The numbers of full-time pastors per church member or regular attender have noticeably increased in recent decades, and it takes money to pay their salaries and benefits.”
On top of this only 2.5 cents on every dollar given by evangelical Christians in the US goes to foreign missions. Figures for 2009 revealed per capita giving of American church members as a percentage of their annual income to be 2%. 20% of strong and very strong Christians account for 80% of giving while 10% give nothing.

Book Explores Ways Faith Is Kept, or Lost, Over Generations

Parents aren’t just trying to pass on to their children a checklist of beliefs, he said. Better than ever, he grasps “the kind of passion these parents had for wanting their children to achieve the peace and the joy and the hope and the inspiration they had found for themselves.”

How to Stop Sounding Stupid and Write Like a Pro

I have a passion for words, for meaningful and remarkable communication. It’s a cause near and dear to my heart. So it drives me bonkers when people waste what they have to say on poor delivery.

No, Women Don’t Make Less Money Than Men

All evidence suggests that though young women have the talent for engineering and computer science, their interest tends to lie elsewhere. To say that these women remain helplessly in thrall to sexist stereotypes, and manipulated into life choices by forces beyond their control, is divorced from reality—and demeaning to boot. If a woman wants to be a teacher rather than a miner, or a veterinarian rather than a petroleum engineer, more power to her.
