It’s Abuse, Not an Affair, and It Appears We Need to be Reminded… Again…

Let’s be frank. This was not an “extramarital relationship.” This was abuse and statutory rape. The anonymous youth pastor is serving time in prison and will be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life because he is guilty of being a sexual predator.
Children, including teenagers, don’t commit adultery with adults. There is no “consent.” Our courts have rightly determined that teens are incapable of consenting to sex with an adult.

Immigration and the Unique Role of the Church

Yet looking out over the many aspects of the immigration debate in America, who could possibly encompass the cause? Who could stand for justice and usher in racial reconciliation? Who determines what rights each individual deserves as a part of their very being, their innate humanity?
There is no one man or woman who could stand for such a cause, who could answer these questions. Yet there are many who can participate in bringing about a new way of being, because they have a vision that comes from a leader who did not align with a cause, but rather was the cause, “the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)

Decrease in cultural Christians

He explains, “In some ways, it’s much easier to talk to people who are resistant than to talk to people who are apathetic. And I would much rather have a conversation–an honest conversation where I’m listening thoughtfully and praying as I’m doing so–with someone who is angry with Christianity. Because at some level, people who are angry about Christianity or antagonistic toward spiritual things are actually more sensitive and aware of spiritual realities than people who are just apathetic.”

6 Ways to Kill a Bible Class

  1. Don’t worry about preparing your lesson in advance, just wing it.
  2. Don’t start class promptly.
  3. Don’t expect too much out of your students.
  4. Don’t vary your teaching methods.
  5. Don’t get to know your students personally.
  6. Keep it serious!

Working Around God: Technology, the Pace of Life, and the Shabbos Elevator

Thus, the Shabbos elevator at least has the potential to be the irritating grain of sand which, under the right circumstances, can become a pearl in the (non-observant) observer’s eye, whereby frustration flips into epiphany. Slow down! What’s the hurry? Turn off the autopilot. Reflect a little. Give pause and give thanks. A true and deep appreciation of human community doesn’t happen at a clip. It arrives slowly; drip-by-drip, floor-by-floor. The Jewish Sabbath affords a humble, pre-Christian rapture, delivered in installments.

Time to rethink ‘concession’ mentality on Cuba

The “concessions” talking point might be a cute sound bite, but it’s wrong. For decades, the American people have been force-fed the baseless notion that any reform of Cuba policy, no matter how practical, is tantamount to rewarding the regime for its iron grip over the island.

The work speaks for itself

That combination the Spurs have achieved is what most of us want out of professional life. We want to do something we love. We want the freedom to experiment and to know that if we’re true to the process, we won’t be deemed a failure, regardless of the result. We want to work alongside people who root for us to be really good. We want to know that if we have to wind the clock 12 full months after being so very, very close, everyone will exhale, regroup and stay with it.
