It’s a hard place to be as a dad. Let’s admit it, a sad place. After all, we want our kids to be happy, and I believe God’s the key to that happiness. We want our kids to be loved, and God’s the source of it all. Colin hasn’t forsaken the faith, but I want it to be as important to him as it is to me. To see what I see in it. But it’s impossible to force someone to look through another someone’s eyes.
Seven Habits of Outwardly Focused Churches
- The church takes time during each worship service to pray for the community.
- A volunteer or staff person is accountable for the outreach ministry of the church.
- A regular report is provided to church members about outreach and ministry efforts in the community. What gets reported gets done.
- Churches have regular “mystery” guests come to the worship services.
- The church gives obsessive attention to their websites.
- The churches are intentional about scheduling ministries, events, and activities for reaching the community.
- Churches are intentional about connecting with their communities through social media.
Four Modern Versions of the Bible that Are Ruining the Bible
I’m not convinced commercial Bible publishing is a bad thing in itself. There have been too many positive effects, not least of which is the publication of many genuinely high-quality Bibles. Yet the commercialization of scripture has also given us four iterations of the modern Bible — which I believe are causing us to value the Bible less and read it less.
When Our Sons Ask For Stones, Let’s Give them Bread
We take what most of us consider the most important thing in our lives and give it the weight of our worship in a way that is both dishonorable and unsustainable. And we end up living “Thus saith the family” rather than “Thus saith the Lord.” I know personally what happens when one worships his wife: he harms her. I know what happens when we make our children the center of our universe: we harm them. That is true hatred. Trading in the cross for the thin gruel of temporary satisfaction, appetites, compulsions, is the worst thing you could do to somebody. And when it comes down to seeking one’s happiness over their holiness, we aid and abet the theft of their eternal joy.
