Cross-like Love and Non-Violence

In this light, it’s hardly coincidental that the definitive proof Jesus offered Pilate that his kingdom was “not of this world” was that, if his kingdom had been of this world, he says, “my servants would fight to prevent my arrest…” (Jn 18:36). Jesus remark to Pilate thus suggests that a distinctive characteristic of all who belong to his kingdom, and that distinguishes his kingdom from the kingdoms of this world, is that they do not fight, even when they would be considered justified to do so.

Curing A Critical Spirit In Students

  1. Cultivate gratitude on a regular basis.
  2. Discuss self-awareness and self-management.
  3. Don’t allow criticism without a solution.
  4. Demonstrate the value of diversity.
  5. Help them learn to evaluate objectively.
  6. Enable them to be a good-finder.

Moviegoers Want More Faith-Based Films, Hollywood Delivers

Four faith-based films have already earned more than $50 million each in ticket sales, according to Boxofficemojo.com. Those films—”Noah,” “Heaven is for Real,” “Son of God,” and “God’s Not Dead”—are among the top 20 grossing films of 2014.
And movie audiences may want more, according to a survey of 1,054 Americans from Nashville-based LifeWay Research. Researchers found that half of Americans (56 percent) say they wish there were more movies with Christian values.

Brand New ESV Reader’s Bible

So there’s no way I’d fail to pick up the new ESV Reader’s Bible. It’s (almost) everything I’ve wanted for coming up on ten years, something I even tried (unsuccessfully to create for myself): an ESV with no verse numbers or other in-text intrusions, set in a single column, with beautiful type—type carefully set so as not to “ghost” through to the back side of the page. This is the best Bible you can get today, and you should get it right away.

Never Teach a Class Outdoors and Other Key Lessons I Have Learned

  • Never give copies of your books to friends and family
  • Never call students by their first names
  • Never try to be cool (and it is never cool to remind students that the word’s history dates back to Chaucer)
  • Never lament the building of new football stadiums rather than new library wings
  • Never become an administrator
  • Never allow the Internet in the classroom
  • Never teach a class outdoors
  • Never refer to yourself by the title “Dr.”—unless you are a real doctor
  • Never confuse a syllabus with reality
  • Never turn down a plum administrative position

My Son’s Letter From Camp Was NOT What I Expected

Last year my 8-year-old son went to summer camp. It was the first time he had been away from home for more than a night. An hour after he left, I missed him. By the time I went to bed, I found myself wandering into his bedroom, just to feel close to him. As the days passed, I wrote to him daily. Each hour dragged as I’d wait for the mailman, hoping and praying for just one letter from him. By that point I missed him so much, I began to imagine what he might write to me… Yesterday I received a letter. It’s just slightly different from what I imagined.
