How the Entitlement Mentality Crept into Our Churches

For now, let me share some key reasons many of our congregations have become more like country clubs than churches, a place where some members demand their way instead of serving and self-sacrificing.

  1. Failure to state clearly the expectations of church membership on the front end.
  2. Failure to make certain as possible that members are Christians.
  3. Seeking numerical growth at all costs.
  4. Failure to remind the congregation regularly what it means to be a part of the body of Christ.
  5. Allowing the most entitled members into positions of key leadership in the church.
  6. Failure to deal with difficult issues.

Powerful Testimony by Paula Harrington

Because of my history, I have a very soft spot for wild kids and single moms who are going through hard times. Thanks to God, I have been given many opportunities to sit and pray with women who are fighting addictions and trying to overcome. Sometimes that has been in locked rooms at the local jails, and other times in hospital rooms or income-based apartment complexes.
The only way to survive this crazy life is to take our past and pain to the altar of the Creator of the universe. Accept His healing, grace, and comfort, and then use our blessings to bless others.

From awful to fantastic: Three lessons in NPR’s Dr. Jekyll-and-Mr. Hyde coverage of religious freedom

  1. We (and I certainly include “me” in that “we”) need to be careful not to overgeneralize when discussing major news organizations.
  2. We need to be educated readers.
  3. It doesn’t hurt to pay attention to certain bylines.

No, The Bible Doesn’t Command We “Stand With Israel”

The bottom line: What the world calls Israel is NOT what the Bible calls Israel. The world is referring to a nation state that was created just a generation ago– the Bible is talking about the people of Abraham, which are a spiritual people who have accepted their king: Jesus. It’s not a people group one is born into, but a people group you join by pledging your allegiance to Jesus.

The ‘Kellyanne Conway on the couch’ controversy is so incredibly dumb

… every party not in the White House likes to express shock and outrage at the way the other side is treating this hallowed job and office. Republicans were incensed when Bill Clinton and Barack Obama treated the Oval Office with slightly less formality than did Ronald Reagan, who, famously, always wore a suit coat in the Oval Office.

George W. Bush opens up on Trump’s war with the media, travel ban, Russia and veterans
Early on in the exclusive sit-down, the former president expressed a clear-eyed support for the news media, saying a free press was “indispensable to democracy.”

“We need an independent media to hold people like me to account,” Bush told TODAY’S Matt Lauer.
“Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power.”
Bush was asked about the media’s role in light of President Donald Trump’s recent characterization of the media as the “enemy of the American people.” He noted he spent a lot of time during his two terms trying to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to embrace an independent press.
“It’s kind of hard to tell others to have an independent free press when we’re not willing to have one ourselves,” he said.
