Why Is This Issue Different?

Approving of homosexual behavior violates the catholicity of the church. Sure, many in the West are arguing for the legitimacy of same-sex relationships, but for 99.9% of our history the church has considered homosexual behavior to be sinful. (And before anyone mentions slavery at this point I would encourage him to read Rodney Stark’s book For the Glory of God where he debunks the myth that the church was pro-slavery for 1800 years.) No one had to write a confession about homosexuality, because it was an implied status confessionis issue. No church would have tolerated a difference of opinion, let alone a deviant practice.

The Humility Bubble Lesson

Anyway, the point is that knowledge leads to humility and ignorance leads to arrogance. The more certain we are that we know everything, that we have absolutely the last and final word, the more certain it is that we are actually unaware of how very little we know. We may not even know the questions—much less the answers!

To All the Girls Who Didn’t Say No

So to all you girls who didn’t say no, who have heard the messages out there on saving yourself for marriage, and staying pure, and you feel like you just want to run because you have already crossed the line… and you feel marked…and you think there is no turning back…let me speak this truth to you:
Jesus does NOT condemn you.

Phelps, Driscoll, and Gothard

Of course we like to think of ourselves as the Christian Paul Revere, warning others about the great dangers out there. We’re doing God’s work in rehashing the book promotion deal, in speculating on Phelps’ excommunication, in playing footsy with accounts of abused interns. The truth is, however, that insofar as our distance makes us powerless to do anything about these stories it likely makes it useless to say anything about these stories.

The Spurs’ great H-E-B commercial legacy

I’m aware that all NBA cities have these sorts of locally run commercials where NBA players pitch car dealerships and mattress stores and so on — I’ve watched them in Houston for years now — but I feel confident in assuming that none are better than Spurs/H-E-B ones. The most recent batch, which went live in October, had a reverb that, for the first time in my memory, extended all the way into my Internet purview, landing at Yahoo! and Sports Illustrated and SLAM and more.
