Travels with Tony

OK, hiatus is over. Let’s get back to work. I’ve spent the last few weeks traveling with Tony Fernández, my friend from Matanzas, Cuba. Tony has been the Herald of Truth representative in Cuba since 1995, doing follow-up on our radio ministry all across the nation of Cuba.

Tony arrived in the States on September 11; he’ll leave October 9 to return home. While he was with us, he did the following:

    • Spoke twice for the bilingual group at the University Church of Christ in Abilene
    • Taught three classes at ACU’s Summit
    • Spoke to students at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama
    • Spoke to the main assembly of the University Church of Christ in Abilene
    • Spoke at Coventry Christian School in Pennsylvania and met with area church leaders
    • Spoke to the Chesmont Church of Christ in Pottstown, Pennsylvania
    • Spoke twice to Harding University’s student chapel
    • Gave a keynote lecture and taught three classes at the Harding Lectureship

After leaving here, Tony spoke yesterday for the church of Christ in Clinton, Mississippi. Busy times!

A number of Tony’s talks can be found online. Let me share here a video that was prepared for Harding. It’s only four minutes and well worth your time.

If the video doesn’t play well, you might try watching it on Facebook.
Facebook videos don’t always embed well.

ACU Summit summary

Interrupting the discussion on politics, let me comment a bit about ACU’s Summit. To be honest, for me, much of the value of such gatherings is the interaction with others. Classes and lectures used to mean more to me when I was younger; I still learn many things now, but seeing others is what I really look forward to.

A few people that I met/saw at Summit this year: Randy Hall, Reg Cox, Brian Sandine, Ken Mick, Jim McKissick, Don Middleton, Shane Coffman, Jerry Hill, Cory & Michelle Long, C.K. Holt, Mike & Mignon Riley, Andy Wall, Jay Guin, Katherine Gould, Bobby Ross, Erik Tryggestad, Milton Jones, Andy Baker, Mark Edge, Carlos Gonzalez, Paul Gonzalez, Gloria Gonzalez, Isaac Gonzalez, Tom Allen, Jerry Rushford, Mark Woodward, James Satcher… OK, I give up. There are too many to name.

The much-anticipated Shane Claiborne was excellent. Hearing him was a lot like reading his books, except that I don’t imagine him giggling when I read his books. Josh Graves did a good job, as did Reg Cox. Andy Wall was excellent, and Eddie Sharp did not disappoint. Steve Ridgell did a fantastic job with his class. Voces was wonderful in concert, though I wish they’d skipped the patriotic song (and the crowd’s response really creeped me out).

We had a good breakfast for Herald of Truth. I got to lead a bilingual prayer on Monday night (and my cat got to follow it on the Internet, as the photo shows. My wife says the cat stared at the screen throughout my prayer).

All in all, it was a great few days.

ACU Summit

Well, it’s that time of year. ACU is holding their annual Summit. Used to be called “Lectureship,” but that name was deemed to be unfriendly to students. I’m waiting for the day when someone points out that “summits” are typically meetings held between the leaders of different nations, and they’ll choose a name that better reflects what it is. Something catchy, like “Lectureship.” But I digress.

If anyone will be around for Summit this week, I hope you’ll join Herald of Truth on Tuesday morning for breakfast. We’ll be giving a report on what we’re doing, as well as talk about some of our future projects. We’ll be in the Living Room of the Campus Center at 7 a.m. on Tuesday; there is no charge and some tickets will be available at the door.

Speaking of Herald of Truth, our Director of Ministry, Steve Ridgell, will be speaking in the Teague Center on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at 4 p.m. He’ll be talking about evangelism, looking at the use of story in sharing the gospel. Really good stuff. You won’t be sorry if you take time to be there. (If you can’t be there, Steve offers the material in an extended seminar format for churches. Your congregation would do well to invite him to be there).

There will be lots of other excellent classes and lectures (err, summits?). The buzz is all about Shane Claibourne being there, but there should be plenty of other good speakers to hear as well. Hope to see you there!
