The fear of the Lord

B_plugFearing God isn’t a popular concept today, but it’s a popular teaching in the Bible. What does it mean to fear God?

One example that helps me is that of electricity. I’m surrounded almost constantly by wires bearing electricity. They are in the walls, above the ceiling, buried under my feet, or stretched above my head. I don’t worry about them. I’m not afraid of them. I don’t fear electricity in that way.

But I won’t stick a fork in a wall socket, either.

I think of fearing God in the same way. I don’t live cowering in fear of God, but I respect his power, his holiness, his justice. I won’t stick a fork in that socket, either.
