Wednesday’s Links To Go

Were the Church Fathers Consistently Pro-Life?

I don’t think that what the early church in the first few centuries said and did is the final norm for Christians today. Our decisive norm is biblical revelation. Nevertheless, I think we need to take seriously what the Christians in the first three centuries thought Jesus was saying. They were much closer to him in time than we are, and there is reason to think they would have had a pretty good understanding of what he meant. Therefore, given that every single Christian text we have on killing from the first three centuries, whether war, capital punishment, or abortion, says that Christians don’t do that, and with some frequency they say that’s because of what Jesus said and did, I think Christians today ought to listen to them with some seriousness.

You Might Be a Celebrity Christian Wannabe If…

  1. You’d rather minister to strangers on the Internet than those in the hospital, nursing home, shut-ins, or orphans.
  2. You’re jealous when other godly voices are heard and heeded above your own.
  3. You frequently link to other Celebrity Christians in hope that they’ll notice you, and return the favor.
  4. You’re no longer corrected or taught by your local pastor(s), Sunday school teachers, small group leaders, and other Christians.
  5. You’d never take a ministry position that limited or decreased your popularity.
  6. You cannot correct the wrong doctrines of your heroes or admit when they’re wrong.
  7. Before helping another pastor, writer, etc., you ask, “What’s in it for me,” instead of “How can I love God and my neighbor?”
  8. You’re not willing to be unknown.
  9. You care more about shares than prayer. You’re a Christian pastor, author, blogger, writer, teacher, etc.

I Don’t Miss Mayberry. . . And Neither Should You!

So no, I don’t want to go way back when and I don’t know why any other Christian would either. In fact, I don’t know why Christians would long for any idyllic American culture, be it the traditional culture that Mayberry represents or the more progressive culture that America has seemingly become.
Growing up, we would sing the spiritual This World Is Not My Home during church services. Some churches still sing it. But do we really mean it? Because whether it’s the down-home traditional America or the more progressive America, many American Christians seem to baptize the American ideal as the best thing since sliced bread.

Amnesty criticizes US drone program in Pakistan

Several different organizations have tried to track the number of civilian casualties from nearly ten years of drone strikes in Pakistan, including the Long War Journal website, the New America Foundation think tank and the Bureau of Investigative journalism. These groups indicated that the attacks have killed between 2,065 and 3,613 people, the report said. Between 153 and 926 were thought to be civilians.

‘The ocean is broken’

Ten years earlier, when Newcastle yachtsman Ivan Macfadyen sailed from Melbourne to Osaka, all he’d had to do was throw out a baited line to catch a fish.
”There was not one of the 28 days on that portion of the trip when we didn’t catch a good-sized fish to cook up and eat with some rice,” Macfadyen recalls.
But this time, only two fish were caught on the long sea voyage. There were no fish, no birds, in fact there was hardly a sign of life.
